Umcimbi

Food is more than survival. With it we make friends, court lovers and count our blessings. “Umcimbi”in isiXhosa means a an event, occasion or celebration. There is no ‘mncimbi I have ever been to where some type of food offering was not served. The sharing of food has always been part of the human story - “to break bread together” - a phrase that captures the power of a meal to forge relationships. The design of my “Umcimbi” is intentional. It is a family style sharing experience. I am choosing to prepare South African Xhosa inspired meal because I want to see this style of cooking and eating in more spaces. I also want to preserve my culture by learning preparation techniques and flavours. In order for anything to truly be integrated I know one needs to make it their own so I am excited to add my own uniqueness and experience to the dishes. This is for us, come one come all. Set Menu for evening: Iinkobe (een-ko-be) charred corn, pickle onion, lime, chilli, coriander Imifino braised spinach, pumpkin leaves and beetroot tops, leaks, potato Umqa roasted pumpkin, maize meal.
